PURPOSE OF ROLE :

To ensure the Geology department produces accurate data on time, whilst adhering to all FMG standards and all statutory obligations.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES :

- People
Ensure individuals performance objectives and KPI's are met or exceeded.
Coach subordinates on how to use their tools and systems to achieve results.
Provide feedback and performance reviews for subordinates.

- Zero Harm (safety, health, environment, heritage, community)
Monitor the usage of the systems and procedures agreed.
Ensure compliance to the FMG standards and statutory obligations.
Provide leadership and role model for safety behaviours.

- Quality and Customer (Quality Assurance. Quality Control. Risk management, Relationship management)
Ensure that all reporting is accurate and on time.
Manage QAQC checks on drilling data and report performance to Geology Manager Monthly.
Liaise with downstream customers (Perth Geology and engineering) to ensure data is adequate for their requirements.
Work with the drilling contractor to ensure safety and quality control concerns and addressed immediately.

- Business Processes (supply, production, maintenance, cost management)
Ensure all inputs from up-stream and external supplier are delivered to meet requirements.
Report to Senior Geologist on progress against plan and budget tracking.
Ensure that there is no stand down time on drill rigs due to lack of drill locations or pegs.
Make sure the work flows to meet the operational plans.

Growth (continuous improvement, project delivery)
Provide input to technical services to ensure mine planning takes into account ore body characteristics.
Manage improvement suggestions from shopfloor.

Acquiring, exploring and developing Channels Iron Deposits resources within its Nullagine Project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, exploration geologist :
Mapping
Soil and rock sampling
Logging of the diamond and RC drilling programs before to become field supervisor (about 900 holes drilled)
Developing a safe drill culture around the rig
Maintain high levels of QA/QC for sampling and assaying, from collection to lab results interpretation
Create geological models using Vulcan for resource modelling (geological interpretation, digitisation, wireframing)

Then I worked on the Trial Mining Operation (“to assess the performance of the continuous miners that will be used for the commercial mining operations”); collect geological and geotechnical informations, test grade control techniques and reconciliation. Following the mining operation : Three trenches has been excavated by two different surface miners to remove approximately 20,000 tonnes of waste material and 100,000 tonnes of ore (low and high grade), crushed and screened to produce a fine ore product before being stockpiled.

I started to work for BCI as rig geologist. Quickly I got the director manager confidence and became the head (and the only) geologist on site, driving a little team. At the end of the drill campaign I worked in the head office on the geological model then I worked and the “trial mining” as a mine geologist. I feel lucky and proud with my BC Iron experience because I participated on each exploration program step with a high responsibility level then I started successfully to discover the mine geologists work.

I sought this role in order to gain experience in the environmental domain. As soon the first day I was in charge of different files. I succeeded in doing my files in spite of my inexperience and the timing “pressure”. Unfortunately, I was always in front of my computer screen.

There were two persons in this firm, the director and I. Very good mentor, my supervisor taught me the job of geotechnician. All calculations and interpretations were “handmade”, without software. Quickly I became autonomous and produce about two basic reports per day.

This firm managed urban planning and real estate projects. So it had no geoscience skills. I was recruited because the firm was in charge of the realisation of more than 80 hydraulic constructions against flooding.

I had carried out data collections at different geotechnical engineerings and administrations. I could increase in Mapinfo (GIS), which with all datas were assimilated. In a firm essentially composed by geophysicists, I could exercise my skills. In particular, I carried about the geological and hydrogeological summary of the Laâyoune Bassin, where most of their activity is concentrated. My role was to improve surveying electric method prospecting. After long discussions, my suggestions were adopted. My activity illustrated that geophysicists had to work with geologists to perfect the prospecting results.
